Congress amid the party's humiliating drubbing in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh is set to become the chief minister finally. He is likely to take the oath on December 7, ANI has reported based on information from sources. A unanimous decision was taken in the Congress Legislative Party meet in Hyderabad and the final decision to appoint the CM was left to the party high command.
The Congress ran into what has now become a stock situation for the party in many states.
Right after the victory in Telangana, dissension broke out in the party over claims to the chief-ministership. It faced an embarrassing prospect given its thin majority in the state. Of the total 119 seats in Telangana assembly, the Congress won 64 just a few more than the majority.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BSR) got 39 seats while the BJP and the AIMIM got 8 and 7 respectively.
It looked as if the Congress might lose its only hard-won state since dissension could lead to defections. With Reddy's name now final for chief-ministership, the crisis is over for the Congress for now. But given the deep divides within the state party over Reddy, the problem can re-emerge later.
The rise of Revanth Reddy in Congress
Revanth faced a challenge from other leaders of the party for his claim to the chief-ministership because he is considered an outsider. Reddy, who started out with the ABVP in student politics, began his career as an MLA with the TDP under Chandrababu Naidu and then shifted to the Congress. He is a sitting Congress MP from Malkajgiri constituency and has been an MLA thrice, twice from the TDP and once from the Congress.
