This happens because the web check-in process has a step where travellers are asked to select a seat where most available seats are assigned a price that they must pay over and above the ticket amount. This looked unfair to most of the air travellers.
The issue finally reached Lok Sabha, where the aviation ministry was asked to respond to whether one can get a free seat after paying for the ticket.
«Whether it is legal to charge extra amount during online check-in after purchase of ticket and if so, the details thereof,» was the question asked in Lok Sabha on 21 December 2023.
A person who has bought an airline ticket after paying all charges and taxes deserves to get a boarding pass without paying any additional amount. «Whether it is possible to get a boarding pass online without paying extra amount for seat allocation in private airlines,» highlighted the Lok Sabha listed question.
A solution was shared by the Gen (Dr.) V.K Singh, Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, for those individuals who do not wish to pay for a preferred seat in the aeroplane or avoid seat allocation charges.

«In case the passenger doesn't wish to opt for a preferred seat, the seat will be assigned free of cost through auto-assigned seat mode by the airline. The boarding pass with the auto-assigned seat will be sent via email to the passenger a few hours prior to the flight departure,» said Minister Singh in Lok
