The incident occurred at 9:07 am (local time) as flight 7C2216 was returning from Bangkok. The aircraft, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, crashed at the airport, located 288 kilometres southwest of Seoul. Thick black smoke and flames engulfed the plane, with local media broadcasting harrowing footage from the scene.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze by 1 pm, but the scale of destruction made identifying the deceased challenging. «After the plane collided with the wall, passengers were thrown out of the aircraft. The chances of survival are extremely low,» a firefighting official stated.
In a televised address, Jeju Air CEO Kim E-bae apologised for the tragedy, bowing deeply before the nation. «Regardless of the cause, I take full responsibility as the CEO,» Kim stated.
