World Cup 2023 after injuring his ankle during a clash against Bangladesh. Pandya had missed all of the ensuing games but multiple media reports had claimed that the all-rounder could be fit in time for the knockout stages. Pandya has been replaced in the squad by Prasidh Krishna after the change was approved by the World Cup Technical Committee on Saturday, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.
The approval by the World Cup Committee means that Krishna will be available for selection for the crucial clash between India and South Africa on Sunday. The right-arm pacer has taken 33 wickets in his 19 ODI appearances so far and will compete against the likes of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah for a place in India's pace bowling line-up. Any changes to the 15-man squad during the World Cup require the approval of the tournament's Technical Committee, after which the new player is officially added to the squad.
The six-member committee includes ICC General Manager Wasim Khan, ICC Head of Events Chris Tetley, BCCI Acting CEO Hemang Amin, BCCI General Manager Operations Gaurav Saxena and independent representatives Russel Arnold and Simon Doull. Hardik Pandya was an integral part of skipper Rohit Sharma's bowling juggernaut, apart from being a decent batsman at number 6. Pandya also provided the skipper with much-needed support in case any of the regular bowlers had a bad day, fulfilling their quota of 10 overs, allowing Rohit to deepen the Indian batting and play Shardul Thakur as the third pacer.
