The 34-year-old, who took the new ball after India opted to field, bowled five wides in his extended first over to Pakistan openers Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam. The over became the longest by an Indian in Champions Trophy history and the second-longest ever in the tournament. It also surpassed Jasprit Bumrah’s nine-ball over against Pakistan in the 2017 Champions Trophy final at The Oval.
Adding to his troubles, Shami appeared uncomfortable in the intense Dubai heat and briefly returned to the dugout for a change of shoes. When he resumed bowling in the third over of his spell, he was seen grimacing and clutching his ankle or calf area, prompting the team physio to rush in for an assessment.
Despite the discomfort, Shami bowled a tight fifth over, conceding just three runs. However, he immediately walked off the field at the end of the over, leaving Pakistan at 25 for no loss. His departure raised concerns, given that he is making a comeback from a long injury layoff.
Shami had been in excellent form leading into this match, having taken a five-wicket haul in India’s previous fixture
