The accusations comes as the ties between the two nations started deteriorating further with India expelling six Canadian diplomats, hours before Canada’s foreign ministry announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats.
Indian diplomats and consular officials based in Canada leveraged their official positions to engage in clandestine activities, such as collecting information for Indian govt that was used to target members of the South Asian community, alleged Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that is handling the probe into the Hardeep Singh Nijjar murder case. RCMP had arrested three persons in the Nijjar case in May this year.
Canada's Justin Trudeau on the claims said «As the RCMP Commissioner stated earlier, they have clear and compelling evidence that agents of the Government of India have engaged in and continue to engage in activities that pose a significant threat to public safety, including clandestine information gathering techniques, coercive behaviour targeting South Asian Canadians, and involvement in over a dozen threatening and violent acts, including murder.»
