Taylor Swift’s concerts in Austria. The planned assault, which was thwarted just in time, involved two teenagers who allegedly intended to detonate a bomb-filled car and unleash a wave of violence using knives and machetes on fans attending the sold-out shows, as per a Nee York Post report.
The suspects, aged 19 and 17, were arrested in Vienna on Wednesday, leading to the cancellation of Swift’s three scheduled Eras Tour concerts at the Ernst Happel Stadium. The planned attack had the potential to cause massive casualties, as the concerts were expected to draw around 195,000 fans over three days.
According to Austrian security officials, the older suspect, a 19-year-old Austrian with North Macedonian roots, had been radicalized online by ISIS. He had reportedly made significant progress in constructing an explosive device, which he intended to strap to a car and drive into the crowd gathered outside the stadium. A raid on his home uncovered chemical substances and technical devices associated with bomb-making.
The second suspect, a 17-year-old Austrian citizen with Turkish and Croatian heritage, was arrested near the stadium by special police forces. Alarmingly, he had recently been employed by a company providing services at the venue, possibly even working in a security capacity. This development has raised serious concerns about the potential breach of safety at major public events.
