Authorities have now identified the suspect as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old Saudi psychiatrist who has been living in Germany for approximately 20 years. Following the attack, German officials condemned the act, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling it a «terrible, insane» tragedy, particularly just days before Christmas.
Scholz visited the site of the attack in Magdeburg on Saturday, alongside other national and regional politicians, laying flowers outside the main church. A memorial service was planned at the city’s Johanneskirche church later that evening, where mourners gathered to pay tribute to the victims.
Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, who arrived in Germany in 2016 as a refugee, is described as a staunch critic of Islam and the treatment of refugees in Germany. In interviews from 2019, he openly expressed his anti-Islam views, stating to the FAZ newspaper, «There is no good Islam.» He also described himself as an atheist, having renounced his Saudi upbringing and Islamic faith.
Abdulmohsen was a prominent figure within the Saudi expatriate community in Germany, having founded the platform wearesaudis.net to assist Saudi individuals who had renounced Islam, helping them flee to Europe. He campaigned for women’s rights, particularly focusing on helping those who sought asylum after rejecting Islam.
