Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio fans who have seen their heroes starring in separate Karate Kid films decades apart will be thrilled to see both the legends share screen space together for a brand new movie feature installment in Sony Pictures’ hugely popular martial arts saga.
The movie is being directed by Jonathan Entwistle and produced by Karen Rosenfelt. Sony Pictures will release the movie in December, 2024.
The film's plot is being kept under wraps, although rumors have it that it will carry on the original franchise's mythology. But the new movie will see Macchio reprising his role as Daniel LaRusso, the karate champion molded by Pat Morita’s Mr. Miyagi, while Chan plays Mr. Han, the kung fu expert who assisted Jaden Smith in fending off bullies, in the Sony Pictures 2010 Karate Kid remake.
Through the popular Netflix series "Cobra Kai," which revealed its sixth and final season earlier this year, Macchio has maintained the role of Daniel. Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg devised the program, which is set several decades after the events of the first «Karate Kid» films and rekindles the rivalry between Daniel, who is now middle-aged, and Johnny Lawrence, who is played by William Zabka.
Prior to Cobra Kai, five Karate Kid films were made, which began 1984, and they collectively grossed more than $430 million globally.
