Jakob Chychrun signs 8-year extension with Washington Capitals worth $72 million
Jakob Chychrun on Tuesday re-signed his contract with the Washington Capitals for an eight-year extension worth $72 million.
The defenseman, who was acquired by the side in the last offseason, helped them emerge as the top NHL team by delivering offense from the blue line.
He has now been signed for a long-term contract with the Washington Capitals, ESPN reported.
What to know about Jakob Chychrun deal
According to reports, Chychrun will get $9 million against the salary cap from the start of the new deal that kicks off next season and continues until 2033. This comes ahead of Chychrun's 27th birthday next week.
Prior to this, he had a six-year contract with Arizona Coyotes, which he signed in 2018 and was scheduled to be among the unrestricted free agents this summer.

With the $72 million deal, Chychrun is now the highest-paid defenseman in the Washington Capitals. He is also second on the team in terms of salary, next to Alex Ovechkin, who gets $9.5 million.
The player was acquired by Capitals from the Ottawa Senators last summer as part of its 2026 third-round draft pick.
This season, Chychrun has put in a top-notch performance so far and gone on to score career high in points (43) across 65 games, besides tying with a personal best of 18 goals.
