TOKYO—Japan said it would restrict the export of advanced semiconductor equipment, a measure that could hamper development of China’s industry and marks a further cooling of relations after the detention of a Japanese pharmaceutical-company employee in Beijing.
Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi will visit Beijing on Saturday to meet with his Chinese counterpart, the Japanese government said Friday. It didn’t disclose the purpose of the visit, the first by a Japanese foreign minister to China since December 2019, but Tokyo has called for the quick release of the detained Japanese man.
