Jasprit Bumrah delivered a stellar performance against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, clinching impressive figures of 5/21 on Thursday. Bumrah's exceptional display saw him on the verge of a hat-trick, boosting him to the top of the purple-cap leaderboard, tied with Yuzvendra Chahal at 10 wickets each.
His five-wicket haul created history in the IPL, marking him as the first bowler to achieve this milestone against RCB. Bumrah also set a new record of 29 wickets against RCB, surpassing Ravindra Jadeja and Sandeep Sharma's previous records of 26 wickets. He now joined a select group of bowlers, including James Faulkner, Jaydev Unadkat, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, to have secured two five-wicket hauls in IPL history.
Opted to bowl first, MI started the match on a good note as Gerald Coetzee started off his spell impressively on a pitch that favours the pacers. Despite the last-ball six, both Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli have opted to see through the majority of Coetzee's first over.
Bumrah grabbed the big wicket of Kohli in his very first over. Kohli departed on 3(9). However, Faf du Plessis' 61 and Dinesh Karthik's 53* helped the RCB team to post a competitive total of 196/8 in 20 overs.
