According to Variety, Jay-Z's defense team is now banking on the technicalities of the calendar and geography to help clear his name. In a recent letter to Judge Analisa Torres, Spiro argued that the alleged victim, identified as Jane Doe, is too late in filing her claims under the Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence (GMV) Law. The law, Spiro pointed out, was enacted months after the alleged assault took place, and therefore cannot be applied retroactively.
Spiro further asserted that the case was time-barred, citing New York’s Child Victims Act (CVA), which expired in 2021. The defense insists that Jane Doe’s claims are now invalid due to the statute of limitations.
The rape allegations date back to September 7, 2000, following the MTV Video Music Awards. Jane Doe claims she was assaulted by Jay-Z, Sean «Diddy» Combs, and an unnamed female celebrity during a party fueled by drugs. The incident was first outlined in a lawsuit filed in October 2023, but Jay-Z was not named directly until December, when a second amended complaint identified him as one of the alleged perpetrators.
