Jhansi Hospital Fire: At least 10 infants killed in Medical College Children's Ward
The fire started around 10:45 PM on Friday in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College, media reports said. Officials believe an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire.
District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar told media, «Prima facie there is information of the death of 10 children.”
Some children were rescued from the NICU, but the fire claimed the lives of those in the interior section where critical patients receive care, reports said. Divisional Commissioner Jhansi Vimal Dubey said that most of the approximately 30 children in this section were rescued.
A couple from Mahoba district lost their newborn child in the fire, news agency PTI reported.
