This election witnessed an impressive 67.74% voter turnout, the highest since the state’s formation in 2000. Voting took place in two phases, covering 43 constituencies on November 13 and 38 on November 20, in a contest that saw 1,211 candidates vying for 81 seats.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren contested from Barhait, while his wife, Kalpana, represented Gandey. Opposition leader Amar Kumar Bauri (BJP) contested from Chandankiyari, while BJP stalwart Babulal Marandi stood in Dhanwar. Prominent leaders like Speaker Rabindra Nath Mahato (JMM), Deepika Pandey Singh (Congress), and Sudesh Mahto (AJSU Party) were also key contenders.
The election also put a spotlight on 28 reserved ST seats and 9 SC seats. In 2019, the JMM had dominated the ST seats, winning 19, while BJP secured 2.
The BJP-led NDA focused on allegations of corruption and infiltration against the ruling JMM alliance, with top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, targeting Hemant Soren over a money-laundering case. The NDA also highlighted the removal of Champai Soren as a tribal chief minister, framing it as an insult to tribal leadership.
