Reliance Jio expanded its portfolio of 4G feature phones with the JioPhone Prima, a 4G feature phone that comes with support for WhatsApp, UPI payments, live video content and more.
The 4G feature phone is priced at Rs 2,599 and is available across offline and online retail touchpoints including Reliance Digital, JioMart and Amazon.
The device features a 2.4-inch display and a 1800mAh battery with support for 23 local languages.
The phone runs on KaiOS, the same operating system that powers the original JioPhone. The feature-rich OS supports popular smartphone apps such as WhatsApp, YouTube, Google Assistant and Facebook. It also comes with Jio's suite of multimedia apps such as JioCinema and JioTV.
The company has also enabled QR code-bases UPI payments through JioPay.
The phone features a VGA camera on the front and back.
The JioPhone Prima is a sequel to the original JioPhone, which was launched back in 2017. The device presently sits between the higher-end JioPhone Next and the more affordable JioPhone Bharat.
The device was also showcased at the India Mobile Congress this year.
Jio, the largest telecom company in India also has its own Jio Bharat platform, which can be leveraged by other feature phone brands to make 4G feature phones with support for multimedia content.
The company aims to migrate 250 million legacy 2G users to its 4G networks. Jio's head of devices, Sunil Dutt said, adding that Jio is in talks with Nokia, Lava, Itel and other major feature phone makers to make their own versions of the JioPhone Bharat.
