Improving Employment Metrics
The Periodic Labour Force Survey reveals positive trends in India's employment scenario. From 2017-18 to 2023-24, the national unemployment rate dropped from 6% to 3.2%, while the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) surged from 46.8% to 58.2%. The workforce engaged in economic activity grew to an estimated 643.3 million in 2023-24, up from 471.5 million in 2014-15, with women's WPR doubling to 40.3% and youth WPR rising to 41.7%.
Rise of Services & Construction
Services and construction sectors have led employment growth. Between 2014-15 and 2022-23, the services sector added over 53 million jobs, reaching 201.5 million, while construction sector created 22.8 million new opportunities. Manufacturing jobs also rose by 15.5%, adding 8.46 million job opportunities over the same period, and 54.6 million MSMEs created jobs reaching a total of around 230 million jobs in the sector, as per Udyam portal data. India's thriving start-up ecosystem has contributed significantly, as well, generating an estimated 1.55 million jobs since 2016.
