In its ruling on Friday, the commission also asked J&J, the local unit of the American firm, to pay interest at 6% per annum on the compensation amount from the date of filing of the complaints. The compensation has to be paid within two months from the date of the judgement, it said.
Jennifer Bharucha, who filed a petition in 2012 on behalf of her mother seeking compensation, said her late mother had to undergo several revision surgeries due to the faulty hip implant that the company later recalled.
«The court has ruled in our favour, recognising the merits of our case and delivering justice...It's taken us more than a decade to win this case. It was a long struggle,» Bharucha told ET.
