Karnataka Cabinet decides to set up commission to advise on internal quota for SCs
scheduled caste.
The commission will be headed by a retired High Court judge.
The commission will gather empirical data and make its recommendation on the subject to the government, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil told the media. The government will ask the commission to give its report in three months, he said, adding that all government recruitments would be put on hold pending the government decision on internal quotas.
The Congress regime, headed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, had been under pressure from the marginalized SC sub-castes to introduce horizontal reservations as several of them have lost out on opportunities due to the absence of an internal quota system.
The subject came before the Cabinet in the light of the Supreme Court ruling, on August 1, 2024, that there were no constitutional impediments for the state governments to implement internal reservation. The Congress had pledged to implement internal reservation, as recommended by the Justice A J Sadashiva Committee, in its manifesto ahead of the assembly polls, last year.
