Karnataka High Court reportedly denied woman's demand for Rs 6.16 lakh per month in alimony, emphasizing the need for realistic financial claims. The single-judge bench, led by Justice Lalitha Kanneganti, addressed the woman's request for a substantial monthly alimony, which included Rs 15,000 for clothes, Rs 60,000 for living expenses and Rs 50,000 in legal fees, among other costs.
The woman, who is currently receiving Rs 50,000 per month, sought an increase citing her ex-husband's lifestyle. She argued that her former spouse’s expensive clothing habits warranted a similar budget for herself, as her current wardrobe consisted only of «old clothes.» Additionally, her alimony request included Rs 4-5 lakh for medical bills, particularly for knee pain treatments, which she attributed to her ex-husband’s negligence.
Justice Kanneganti was not convinced by the woman’s demands, questioning the necessity of such high expenses. «Does anybody spend this much? A single lady (by) herself...?» she remarked, highlighting the excessive nature of the claim. The court advised the woman to provide a more reasonable account of her expenses if she wanted the court to consider her application further.
