stampede during a Kerala campus fest claimed the lives of four students and left over 50 others injured. Taking place just before singer Nikhita Gandhi's performance at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), the incident unfolded amidst a sudden downpour.
Reports indicate that a single entry and exit gate were being used, allowing pass holders in batches, while a substantial crowd gathered outside the open-air auditorium.
Despite ample seating available—over 1,000 seats—with many vacancies, chaos ensued when the rain began. Senior police officer MR Ajith Kumar highlighted that the auditorium wasn't at full capacity, but the rush caused individuals to break queues, resulting in the tragic stampede.
Describing it as a «freak accident,» the officer noted that the chaos led to the fatal fall of four students while others were walked over.
Sources suggested another factor contributing to the chaos was the announcement favoring entry for engineering students first, causing unrest among others waiting their turn. Steep steps near the auditorium might have also played a role, causing students to lose balance in the rush.
Pramod, a Municipal Councillor, emphasized the impact of a single gate for entry and exit, attributing it to the incident.
Among the injured, two are in critical condition, while over 30 are currently receiving treatment in hospitals.
In response, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired an emergency meeting where ministers expressed condolences. Health Minister Veena George will oversee measures for the injured.
