However, further investigation revealed that while Affan had indeed attacked six people, his mother, who is a cancer patient, survived the attack. She is currently in hospital and is in critical condition.
As per several reports, police stated that Affan visited three houses in Venjaramoodu to carry out the killings. His statements have changed frequently during the investigation. One official said, «Affan keeps saying that his father, who owns a shop in Dubai, had run up a debt of Rs 75 lakh and that he was also in financial trouble because of this. He said no one agreed to help him, but it is not clear how his girlfriend fits into that picture.»
Affan reportedly first attacked his mother and his girlfriend at his home with a sharp object. He then killed his 13-year-old brother with a hammer.
Neighbours have described Affan as a good-natured and soft-spoken person, and they were shocked by the brutal nature of the murders, particularly the killing of his young brother.
