There is an estimated shortage of 100,000-150,000 workers, largely hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam and West Bengal. These workers think the new government will launch development projects in their region, which will create job opportunities for them in their home towns.
The labour shortage has prompted Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) to launch a mega job drive. It has also decided to offer higher wages to migrant workers if they return.
«In the last three months (March-May), we have seen orders from the US climbing by 10% compared to the same period of the previous year,» said K M Subramanian, president of TEA. «Over the past few years, the economic slowdown caused by the Covid pandemic, the US and European economic recession, the Russia-Ukraine war and the resulting industrial recession had hard-hit the apparel export business from Tiruppur. We are witnessing early signs of recovery.»
