LAHDC) in Kargil took oath on Tuesday while National Conference councillor Dr Jaffar Akhone was proposed as the chief executive councillor of the 5th council of the region for the first half of the five-year term.
The NC and Congress had entered into a pre- and post-poll alliance in Kargil and formed the council after winning 22 seats — 12 by NC and 10 by Congress – out of the 26 seats. BJP won two seats while two others were won by the independent candidates.
The 5th LAHDC elections were held on October 4, in which voter turnout of 77.61% was registered. The two independent candidates have pledged their support to the Congress-NC council as well.
The two parties have formed an agenda of alliance to work together for the betterment of people of Kargil and decided that the first two-and-a-half year term will be granted to the NC till April 18, 2026.
“Two executive councillors will be appointed by each party ensuring equal representation and one executive councillor reserved for the principal religious minority will be given to NC in the first half of the five years and in the second term the position will be allocated to Congress,” the parties informed.
The two parties will share the council equally and formulate a common minimum program for successful functioning of the coalition, with a joint consultative committee ensuring smooth functioning.
