Luis Rubiales, the former head of Spain's Soccer Federation, is grappling with a restraining order after being accused of sexual assault for an alleged non-consensual kiss with Spanish Women’s National Team star Jenni Hermoso following the club’s FIFA World Cup victory last month, as reported by the BBC and ESPN.
A judge in Spain has issued a restraining order, mandating that Rubiales must stay at least 200 meters away from Hermoso. The order comes in response to a request from prosecutors, who contend that the kiss was non-consensual.
Rubiales resigned from his position at the federation last week without issuing an apology. His resignation followed mounting calls for him to step down and a women's national team strike that demanded better pay and threatened to boycott matches until Rubiales's departure.
In addition to the sexual assault accusation, Rubiales is facing charges of coercion related to the alleged kiss.
Rubiales posted his resignation on X, characterizing the demand for his departure as «disproportionate.» He further expressed that he and his family had endured persecution. The Spanish Soccer Federation initially defended Rubiales, describing the incident as a «completely spontaneous mutual gesture.»
However, it later launched an internal investigation into Rubiales after FIFA suspended him from all soccer-related activities for 90 days.
In FIFA's suspension, Rubiales and the federation were also prohibited from contacting Hermoso «or her close environment.»
