Dev Kohli, who penned memorable superhit songs like ‘Kabootar Jaa, Jaa, Jaa’, ‘Ye Kaali Kaali Aankhen’, ‘Dil Deewana, Bin Sajna Ke Maane Na’ and ‘Chalti Hai Kay Nau Se Bara’, passed away on Saturday morning after a prolonged illness, industry sources said.
Veteran lyricist Dev Kohli, who is known for penning iconic songs for classic films 'Baazigar', 'Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!' and 'Maine Pyar Kiya', passed away on Saturday morning in Mumbai due to age-related ailments. He was 81.
According to the news agency PTI, Kohli's spokesperson Pritam Sharma said the lyricist was being treated for several age-related health problems at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.
After he showed some recovery, he was discharged and brought back to his Andheri home a few days ago.
«He was in hospital for almost three months, he was brought back home 10 days ago. He passed away at 4 am today due to age-related issues at his residence in Andheri,» the spokesperson was quoted as saying to PTI.
News agency IANS reported that Kohli's body was kept for people and his fans to pay their last respects at his home in Lokhandwala Complex till 2 pm.
It was also reported that Kohli's last rites will be performed between 5-6 pm at Oshiwara crematorium in suburban Mumbai.
Born in November 1942 to a Sikh family in Rawalpindi (now Pakistan), Kohli moved to India post-partition in 1948. After staying in Delhi for some time, his family settled down in Dehradun.
In 1964, he moved to Mumbai and made his debut as a lyricist with 'Khushi Se Jaan Le Lo Ji', composed by music director GS Kohli, in the 1969 film 'Gunda'.
