Perth-headquartered resources specialist Argonaut has dipped into Macquarie’s sell-side ranks to appoint a new head of research.

Hayden Bairstow, who has spent the past decade in sell-side research at Macquarie, would head Argonaut’s research and join its senior leadership team.
He joined Macquarie in 2013 and rose to head of resources research, managing a team of five analysts who together covered nearly 70 ASX-listed mining stocks. He had previously led CLSA’s Australian resources research across a career spanning two decades.
It’s a great hire for Argonaut, which is well known in resources dealmaking and has been pushing to establish a Sydney presence.
“I look forward to working closely with Hayden as we execute Argonaut’s next stage of strategic growth. Hayden’s appointment will take Argonaut’s already impressive research team to the next level as we build out our specialist sector coverage,” Argonaut’s group managing director and head of corporate finance, Greg Southee, said.
Bairstow is joining Argonaut as a long-standing analyst John Macdonald decides to retire. He has joined Argonaut Global Precious Metals Fund’s investment committee, and would continue to consult for the firm’s funds management business.
The hire follows Argonaut’s decision to hire ex Goldman Sachs co-head of equities Ben Clifford.
