Manchester United on Monday sacked Erik ten Hag as the manager of the club’s first team. Ten Hag, who joined United in April 2022, leaves after leading the club to two significant domestic triumphs, including the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
This development comes in after the club suffered another damaging defeat under ten Hag as Jarrod Bowen's penalty in stoppage time gave West Ham a 2-1 win on Sunday.
It is to be noted that United slip to 14th position in the Premier League table, with just three victories of their opening nine games.
In a statement, the club expressed its appreciation for ten Hag’s contributions over the past two years, noting his role in restoring competitive spirit to the team and bringing home much-needed silverware. “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” the club stated.
Taking over as interim head coach is former United star Ruud van Nistelrooy, the current assistant manager at the club. Van Nistelrooy, who enjoyed a successful stint as a player at Old Trafford from 2001 to 2006, will now lead the team, supported by United’s current coaching staff, while the club conducts its search for a permanent head coach.
