Manipur government has decided to convene the Manipur Legislative Assembly from July 31.
Earlier on two occasions the 10 kuki MLAs were not present in the session. Manipur had two sessions since violence broke out on May 3 last year.
The Manipur Cabinet, during its meeting held on Friday decided to convene the session of the assembly. Information and Public Relation minister Sapam Ranjan said that after the recent sitting of Manipur Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die on March 5, the cabinet decided to convene the next session from July 31.
The minister said the number of sittings for the session will be decided by the Business Advisory Committee of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) in a open letter to Union Home minister Amit Shah stated that the rising cases of high-handedness shown towards Kuki-Zo Village Volunteers in Manipur by central agencies are a matter of serious concern for minority tribes, who are facing the brunt of the violence in the ongoing ethnic conflict.
“A number of cases warrant condemnation, especially those that occurred in Jiribam’s Phaitol village and Mongbung village. Seven Kuki women were beaten up by central security forces, and two village boys were taken into custody. Furthermore, three Kuki village volunteers were arrested after an arson attack on the home of L. Hengjol village chief, and five Kuki women beaten up by security forces had to be rushed to Noney Hospital for treatment. Additionally, security forces set fire to the home of
