Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh discussed long-term solutions for the rehabilitation with representatives of Internally Displaced people (IDPs).
Singh on Saturday met the representatives on Saturday in Imphal. He tweeted, “Held a meeting with representatives of IDPs and the members of Relief Committee from across the state at my Secretariat. Deliberated on addressing the immediate needs and concerns of the displaced individuals and discussed long-term solutions for the rehabilitation”.
On August 1, Police in Manipur fired tear gas shells, rubber bullets and batons charged hundreds of internally displaced people who held rallies demanding their return to back home in the border town Moreh.
Four people were injured.
These protesters in the wake of ethnic violence which broke out on May 3 were sheltered in Imphal's Akampat. The protestors claimed that they were living in a relief camp in harsh conditions and wanted the government to ensure security and funds to rebuild their homes and return.
The chief minister in the state assembly recently stated that 18371 families were affected in the violence which started on May 3 last year. There are around 14857 families residing in relief camps. There were 18843 males in the relief camp while the number of females stood at 21245. There are 12977 male children and 13763 female children. The government of India has released Rs 225.25 Crore for the Internally displaced people (IDPs).
