violence is back in Manipur, a labourer from Jharkhand was killed and two others injured in an attack by unidentified assailants in Manipur's Imphal West district on Sunday.
The incident took place in Naoremthong area on Saturday night.
A police official said that the assailants pulled out the three labourers of a construction company from their rented accommodation and shot them on the spot.
One of them, identified as Shree Ram Hangsada, subsequently succumbed to his injuries.The injured, also from Jharkhand, are undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital in Imphal.
Police launched a search operation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. A senior police officer who do not want to be named told ET, «we are examining if extortion demand from the construction company was sought. „
Extortion in Manipur has many manifestation, the organisation now ask traders annd businessman to sponsor nothing less than arms.
During the violence several organization or fringe elements propped up, these organization self style themselves as civil society group. They espouse the cause of fighting for their respective communities and operate like armed cadres of a militia.
At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.
The riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
