Mason Greenwood, the talented forward of Manchester United, will no longer be a part of the team's roster after the attempted rape charge against him was dismissed earlier this year. The club and Greenwood have mutually agreed that his career will not resume at Old Trafford, and steps will be taken to facilitate his transition away from the club.
In a joint statement released by Manchester United, it was conveyed that all parties involved, including Greenwood himself, acknowledged the complexities surrounding his return to the team.
The decision to part ways was deemed most appropriate under the circumstances, and the club is committed to working closely with Greenwood to ensure a suitable outcome for his future endeavors.
Upon conducting an internal investigation, the club found that the material circulated online did not offer a comprehensive portrayal of the events and that Greenwood had not engaged in the alleged offenses that led to his initial charges.
The video shared on social media in 2022, featuring a woman claiming to have been assaulted by Greenwood, painted an incomplete picture of the situation.
Greenwood was initially arrested in January 2022 after a woman posted a video in which she displayed visible injuries, attributing them to an attack by the footballer. Subsequently, in October 2022, Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior.
However, by February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced the discontinuation of the case due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and new evidence that surfaced. The CPS concluded that a conviction was no longer realistically attainable.
