National Highway 29 in Chumoukedima district, Nagaland, two lives were tragically lost as massive boulders cascaded down a hillside, obliterating two cars. Three individuals also sustained severe injuries during the calamity which transpired around 5 pm this evening. But the victims' identities are not known at this time.
Heart-wrenching footage captured on a dashboard camera from a vehicle positioned behind the scene depicted the horrifying sequence of events. The massive rocks pulverized the two cars originating from the Kohima side, while one boulder continued its destructive path, subsequently toppling another unsuspecting vehicle. According to officials cited by news agency PTI, one person perished immediately, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
Furthermore, one individual remains trapped within one of the crushed cars, prompting ongoing rescue efforts by the authorities. The location of the incident, referred to as «pakala pahar,» has gained notoriety for its recurrent landslides and rockfalls, as acknowledged by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, who expressed his condolences for the lives lost via a tweet. Chief Minister Rio further affirmed that his government is diligently undertaking essential measures to provide emergency services and requisite medical assistance to the injured parties.
Additionally, a monetary aid of ₹4 lakh has been announced to support each victim's family during this trying time. He also emphasized the urgency of addressing the safety concerns along the entire stretch of the highway, urging the Government of India and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. (NHIDCL) to promptly implement safety infrastructure
