Deepak Kumar Uprariya, an technician a PSU and worked on building ISRO's Chandrayaan-3, is now reportedly selling tea and idli.
According to a report by the BBC, Uprariya, who works with Heavy Engineering Corporation Limited, Ranchi, has not received salaries for the last 18 months. HEC, a Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU), did many important works for ISRO including the lunar mission.
Many HEC employees have reportedly not received their salaries for the last 18 months.
Upararia initially tried to manage household bills using a credit card.
However, after incurring a huge debt, he started taking money from relatives. Then he mortgaged his wife's jewellery to run the house.
«First I managed my household with a credit card.
I incurred a debt of Rs 2 lakh from it, and I was declared a defaulter. After this, I started running my household by taking money from relatives,» Upararia was quoted as saying by the BBC.
According to Upararia, he now has over four lakh rupees in loans.
«When I thought I would die of hunger, I opened an idli shop.
My wife makes good idlis. Now I am selling idlis worth Rs 300 to Rs 400 every day, which sometimes earns me Rs 50,» he added.
Deepak Upararia, who belongs to the Harda district of Madhya Pradesh, joined HEC at a salary of Rs 8,000.
According to the BBC, Deepak Upararia is not alone; many HEC employees are doing odd jobs to run their households.
As per the report, another HEC staff member, Madhur Kumar, is selling momos, while another, identified as Prasanna Bhoi, is selling tea.
