heavy rainfall affecting Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has revoked the Sunday leave for all government officials and directed them to be actively present in the field. Furthermore, Kejriwal announced that Delhi Cabinet ministers and Mayor Shelly Oberoi will conduct inspections of the "problem areas" within the city. In a tweet, Kejriwal said, “Delhi received 126 mm of rain yesterday.
15% of the total rainfall of the monsoon season fell in just 12 hours. People were very upset due to water logging. Today all the ministers and mayor of Delhi will inspect the problem areas.
Officers of all departments have been instructed to cancel the Sunday holiday and get on the ground." Delhi witnessed a record-breaking rainfall of 153 mm within a span of 24 hours, ending at 8:30 am on Sunday, marking the highest single-day rainfall in July since 1982, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The intensity of the rainfall can be attributed to the convergence of a western disturbance and monsoonal winds, resulting in an intense precipitation spell across northwest India, including Delhi. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, reported this significant rainfall, which ranks as the third-highest single-day rainfall for July since 1958, as stated by a senior IMD official.
Precipitation levels at various weather stations, such as Ridge, Lodhi Road, and Delhi University, reached 134.5 mm, 123.4 mm, and 118 mm respectively. Rainfall between 15 mm and 64.5 mm is considered moderate, while heavy rainfall ranges from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm. The heavy downpour resulted in parks, underpasses, markets, and even hospital premises being submerged, causing chaos on the roads.
