Siddaramaiah said he would decide his future course of legal battle after reading the judgment by which the High Court Tuesday dismissed the legal challenge, he mounted against the August 16 order of Governor Thawarchand Gehlot permitting his prosecution in a case of allotment of housing plots to his wife in Mysuru.
The High Court has only limited the scope of investigation to 17A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and rejected the sanction under section 218 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2003, the CM said in a statement. He would consult legal experts before deciding on the future course of action, he added.
Opposition BJP urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to resign in the wake of the court decision.
BJP Karnataka President BY Vijayendra said the CM must step down and cooperate with the investigation. The judiciary would come down harder on him if he chose to cling on to his chair, he said, while hailing the court judgment. The CM must resign immediately, respecting the verdict of the High Court, he added.
“This is a conspiracy by the BJP. We stand by him,” Deputy CM DK Shivakumar said. The Congress too said it would continue its fight against the Governor who, the ruling party said, was continuing with his attempts to destabilize the government.
