The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that as of February 13, 2025, at least 53 people had died from this disease. The illness progresses at an alarming rate, with most fatalities occurring within 48 hours of symptom onset.
The outbreak is believed to have originated in Boloko village after three children consumed bat meat, according to a report in healthsite.com. All three died within two days, showing signs of haemorrhagic fever, such as internal bleeding and organ failure.
This has raised concerns about the potential zoonotic nature of the disease, where infections jump from animals to humans.
Symptoms of the mysterious illness
Patients affected by the disease have reported symptoms such as fever, headache, chills, diarrhoea, cough and neck stiffness. In severe cases, individuals have developed haemorrhagic symptoms, including internal bleeding, which has heightened concerns among health officials.
