Before Ursula Buffay became Phoebe’s troublemaking twin, she was actually a completely separate character on another popular sitcom—Mad About You. Running from 1992 to 1999, Mad About You featured Kudrow’s Ursula as a clueless, unhelpful waitress, a role that existed before Friends even began airing.
Rather than recasting the role when Friends debuted in 1994, producers made the brilliant decision to tie the two universes together, keeping Kudrow as Ursula and making her Phoebe’s identical twin. Ursula went on to cause havoc across eight episodes of Friends—from pretending to be Phoebe to stealing her identity for an adult film career.
