Angela Mentis, National Australia Bank’s chief digital, data and analytics officer, will retire at the end of the month, taking one of the potential internal successors to chief executive Ross McEwan out of the race.
Her role will be filled by Les Matheson, the current chief operating officer, who will retain that position while adding oversight of digital and data, the bank said on Thursday. Ms Mentis is the second senior executive to leave NAB this year, after the retirement of CFO Gary Lennon in July.

Ms Mentis is a 17- year NAB veteran, who ran its Bank of New Zealand subsidiary between 2018 and 2021 before returning to Australia. She is also a former group executive of NAB’s business and private bank, and has also led its corporate and institutional bank.
She was considered to be one of the internal successors to Mr McEwan, who is four years into a term that is expected to last about five years.
Her departure leaves three other senior executives leading that succession race: Andrew Irvine, head of the business and private bank; Rachel Slade, who runs the personal bank; and Nathan Goonan, who replaced Mr Lennon as chief financial officer in July.
Ms Mentis has been in banking for 37 years, beginning her career at Macquarie and also spending time at Westpac, BT and Citibank.
“Angie has always shown what it means to put customers first and has delivered outstanding results by doing that very well during her career,” Mr McEwan said in a statement.
Mr Matheson will begin his expanded role from November 1, the day of Ms Mentis’ retirement. He will also be responsible for NAB’s digital bank UBank, group marketing and governance.
