NASA satellites unearth a ‘ghost island’. This is what we know about it

Island Formation
The Kumani Bank mud volcano erupted in 2023, creating a transient landmass off Azerbaijan's coast. The island was composed of a mix of fluids, gases, and sediments forced to the surface due to subsurface pressure.

Satellite Observations
NASA’s Landsat 8 and 9 satellites monitored the island’s lifecycle. Images showed the island breaking the water's surface in early February 2023. At its peak, the island measured around 1,300 feet across.
Island’s Disappearance
The island quickly eroded. By late 2024, it was almost entirely gone. Scientists compared its retreat to an apparition vanishing, as the sediment returned to the sea.
