The story delves into the primal and feral aspects of motherhood, exploring themes of identity and power.

The film’s journey began when Amy Adams' production company, Bond Group, and Megan Ellison's Annapurna Pictures acquired the rights to Yoder’s novel. Marielle Heller worked with them to develop the script, which led to Searchlight Pictures acquiring worldwide distribution rights in a deal worth over $25 million in 2022.
