Fumihiko Yasuda, the leader of Team Ninja, explained the decision to remake Ninja Gaiden 2 in a post on Xbox Wire. He acknowledged that some fans might have been surprised by the simultaneous announcement and release of Ninja Gaiden 4.
Yasuda said that the main reason for remaking Ninja Gaiden 2 Black was to reassure long-time fans about the future of Ryu Hayabusa. He also emphasised that the remake was intended to keep players entertained while waiting for Ninja Gaiden 4.
