Manipur government has clarified that there has been no additional deployment of security forces in the state. The security personnel who were requisitioned outside Manipur for the conduct of the General Elections to the 18th Lok Sabha are merely returning to their original bases.
This comes in response to rumors circulating on social media about military reinforcements being sent to the state amidst current unrest. Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a high-level meeting to review Manipur's security situation, seeking to strategize the deployment of central forces to restore peace.
Additional CRPF troopers were deployed in Jiribam district following the killing of a 59-year-old farmer, with tensions high between Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities.
Rehanuddin Choudhury, Officer on Special Duty (Home) in Manipur, stated, “It is a matter of grave concern that many rumours and speculations are being circulated in social media and online messaging platforms that additional Central Security Forces are being sent to Manipur in view of the current situation in Manipur. It is clarified that this speculation of military reinforcement into the State has no basis, and it should be ignored as misinformation.
The fact is that the security personnel requisitioned outside Manipur for the conduct of the General Elections to the 18th Lok Sabha are returning to their original bases in Manipur.”
He appealed to civil society organizations, media, and individuals to refrain from amplifying such misinformation as it may inflame public sentiments and create complications for law enforcement.
