troops may be moved to the warfront in Ukraine. This follows the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea. The two sides had signed numerous agreements with a focus on defense cooperation. It is still unclear if North Korean troops will be a part of any combat mission and also there is no clarity on the number of troops who will be moving to Ukraine. Reuters has reported that both the US and Ukraine have taken cognizance of this possibility and are working towards tackling the issue.
Last August, a Russian talk showed had claimed that 100,000 troops from North Korea were ready to assist the Russians in their ongoing war with Ukraine. The agreement signed between the two countries during Putin’s visit assumes significance in the defense cooperation between the two countries. While the number of troops who will be sent to the warfront is not known, it has been reported that they will be involved in engineering and construction related activities in the ‘occupied’ territories of Ukraine. Putin had denied this during his visit to Pyongyang.
Air Force Major General Pat Ryder said that the North Koreans should reconsider sending their troops to a war front. He warned that they would be cannon fodder. He said the US will keep an eye on these developments.
