autorickshaw drivers of Ola and Uber have threatened to go on strike in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad from this February 20.
They are demanding revised cab fares to be implemented
Keshav Kshirsagar, president of the Indian Gig Workers Front and Baghtoy Rickshawala auto union, said the companies are still to revise cab fares as set by the regional transport authority (RTA) on Jan 3. He announced plans for a significant demonstration at the Pune regional transport office (RTO) on February 20, followed by a cessation of Ola and Uber cab operations until revised fares are enforced. Additionally, autorickshaws associated with these companies and other app-based aggregators will also suspend services, with only metered autorickshaws remaining operational.
He said, “On Feb 20, there will be a major demonstration by cabbies in front of the Pune regional transport office (RTO). Later, no cabs under Ola and Uber will operate until revised cab fares are implemented. Further, autorickshaws working for these companies and other app-based aggregators also won’t operate. Only autos by the meter will be available.”
The RTA, headed by the collector, had previously sanctioned new fare rates, setting the base fare for the initial 1.5 kilometers at Rs37, and Rs25 per subsequent kilometer in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Baramati.
“We met the regional transport officer and district collector on Monday. While the RTO said they will convene a meeting with aggregator companies on Tuesday, the collector said he will gather information first
