NPS or the older pension schemes in case of death during service, discharge on grounds of invalidation, or disablement.
In an Office Memorandum dated October 25, 2024, DoPPW said, «By rule 10 of the Central Civil Services (Implementation of National Pension System) Rules, 2021, every Government servant covered under the National Pension System shall, at the time of joining Government service, exercise an option in Form 1 for availing benefits under the National Pension System or the Central Civil Service (Pension) Rules or the Central Civil Service (Extraordinary Pension) Rules in the event of his death or boarding out on account of disablement or retirement on invalidation.»
The memorandum highlights that government servants already under the NPS must also exercise this option, irrespective of whether they are newly appointed or have been in service for a long period. The rule mandates that an employee exercise this choice when joining government service. In addition to the option itself, employees must submit details of their family in a separate Form 2, which must be submitted to the Head of Office along with Form 1, the form where the option is exercised.
The forms in question, Form 1 (option form) and Form 2 (family details form) are essential in determining the pension entitlements of an employee’s family in case of unforeseen events. Here are two options in the Form 1:
