oil and gas sector was the lone bright spot in a tepid job market in March, with a 20%-plus year-on-year growth in hiring, according to the monthly Naukri JobSpeak Index.
The index for March stood at 2,657, down 4% compared to the previous month and 11% year-on-year.
Despite cautious market sentiments, especially within IT and software, there were a few bright spots this month, as per the index.
The oil and gas sector displayed robust hiring trends, with the highest demand for mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers and electrical engineers, growing 22% year-on-year. Hiring was particularly high in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad.
Although metros witnessed a hiring dip overall, certain sectors like oil and gas showed positive hiring trends.
Hiring in the pharma sector was marginally positive, with a 2% growth year-on-year. Notable growth in hiring activity in this sector was seen in Ahmedabad, Baroda and Mumbai.
Other key sectors such as IT, BPO and retail witnessed 16%, 6% and 5% year-on-year dips respectively in hiring.
Jodhpur led the hiring trend with 13% year-on-year growth in new job creation in March, followed by Rajkot, Raipur and Guwahati with 12%, 7% and 6% growth in new job creation respectively.
The category of senior professionals, with more than 16 years of experience, saw the highest hiring activity, with an 11% year-on-year increase in hiring in March. Conversely, entry-level professionals witnessed an 11% dip in new job
