Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday labelled the Congress party as a “disciple” of Pakistan, alleging that the neighbouring country is eager to see the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, referred to as ‘shehzada’ (prince), become the next Prime Minister of India.
His remarks came in the wake of reports that Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, a former minister in Pakistan’s cabinet under Imran Khan, shared a video featuring Gandhi on social media, praising him.
Speaking at a rally in Anand town of central Gujarat, Modi said, “Pakistan is crying because Congress is dying here. Pakistani leaders are praying for Congress. Pakistan is eager to make ‘shehzada’ (referring to Rahul Gandhi) the next prime minister. This is not surprising because we already know that Congress is Pakistan’s ‘mureed’ (disciple). The partnership between Pakistan and Congress has been exposed. It shows the country’s enemies want a weak government in India, not a strong one.”
The post from the Pakistan minister on his social media handle featured excerpts from Gandhi’s speech with the caption “Rahul on fire,” drawing sharp criticism from BJP leaders.
Amit Malviya, the BJP’s IT cell chief, took to social media to question the Congress’s association with Pakistan, pointing out Mr Hussain’s previous role in Imran Khan’s cabinet.
“Ch Fawad Hussain, who served in the Imran Khan cabinet, as Minister for Information and Broadcasting, is promoting Rahul Gandhi. Is the Congress planning to contest election in Pakistan? From a manifesto, that has imprints of the Muslim league to a ringing endorsement, from across the border, Congress’s dalliance with Pakistan can’t get more obvious,” he said.
