SCL) in Mohali is underway and a committee has been formed to assess the bidders, a senior government official told ET.
On September 22, the ministry of electronics & information technology (MeitY) issued an expression of interest (EoI) seeking commercial and technology players with necessary technological and operational expertise to modernise SCL.
It sought to transform SCL into an R&D-led Center of Excellence with semicon R&D capabilities encompassing advanced nodes, advanced packaging, compound semiconductors, design and EDA tools, materials and other R&D areas.
It also sought to transform SCL into an at-scale manufacturing entity with volume production of semiconductor devices / chips.
Chips from SCL, which is the only unit in the country to manufacture chips, have gone into previous space missions, however, the nodes are very old and need to be updated with the latest in modern technology. Government has earmarked around $1 billion for its modernisation out of the $10 billion India Semiconductor Mission, ET had reported previously.
«For modernisation of Mohali SCL, a committee has been formed. They're currently engaged in drawing up a plan. Few initiatives have already been taken up, because there is a management committee of semiconductor labs also,» a senior government official said. «They have listed bare minimum items, which are very old and need replacement. Those things are already on the way. And
