Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice on a plea seeking a CBI probe into alleged instances of paper leak and malpractices in the conduct of NEET-UG 2024 examination held on May 5.
A vacation bench, comprising justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, tagged the plea with existing cases raising similar issues.
The bench directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to respond within two weeks. The bench verbally observed that it is mindful of the fact that the issue at hand involves the future of 24 lakh students.
The Centre had, on Thursday, informed the Supreme Court that it has decided to scrap the scorecards of 1,563 candidates who were given grace marks in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (Undergraduate) 2024.
It said these candidates will be given the opportunity to take a retest. If any of them chose not to take the retest, then their earlier score, without the grace marks, will be counted. This means that the candidates, who got less than the allotted time to write the NEET-UG 2024 for admission into medical colleges, will have the option to retake the exam or forego the grace marks awarded earlier for suffering a loss of time.
If the candidates choose to take the re-exam, their earlier NEET score will stand cancelled and instead, the new score after the re-exam, would be counted, the counsel for the central government had told the vacation bench. The bench was also told that the said course of action has been suggested after a committee meeting was held on June 12.
